The Tier 2 Sportsperson Visa enables elite level sportspersons and coaches from outside the European Economic Area (EEA) to come to the UK to aid the development of their chosen sport. You must be recognised by the sport’s governing body as being at the highest level of your profession internationally. You will also need to be endorsed by your sport’s governing body before applying for a visa.

Applicants for this permit are expected to make a major contribution to the development of their sport while living and working in Britain.

Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for a Tier 2 Sportsperson visa, the applicant will need to satisfy UK Visas and Immigration eligibility requires and must:

  • Be recognised by the sport’s governing body as an elite sportsperson or qualified coach
  • Endorsed by the sport’s governing body
  • Have a certificate of sponsorship from their approved sponsor
  • Know English to the CEFR Level A1 (speaking and listening)
  • Have enough money to support yourself without relying on public funds

The sponsor is the organisation that wishes to employ the applicant; it must be registered with the UK Border Agency and have a sponsorship license before it can issue the applicant with a certificate of sponsorship.

If you are applying for a Tier 2 Sportsperson Visa, the governing body of the applicant’s chosen sport must have endorsed the applicant.

Length and conditions of stay in the UK

Applicants are permitted to do the following:

  • Bring family members to the UK as dependants
  • Have a second job in the same profession and at the same level as their main job for up to 20 hours per week
  • Study, as long as it does not interfere with the job they are sponsored for
  • Travel abroad and return to the UK
  • Volunteer
  • Work for the sponsor in the job described in the certificate of sponsorship

Applicants cannot:

  • Receive public funds
  • Start working before they get a visa

If your application for a Tier 2 Sportsperson visa is approved then your first visa can be valid for a maximum period of 3 years. Tier 2 visa holders can apply to extend their stay by a further three years. Individuals may also be able to apply to settle in the UK.

Sportspersons and coaches may bring family members (known as dependents) to live with them while they are working in the UK. Your partner and any children under the age of 18 may accompany you as your dependants.
