Only nationals of countries outside the European Economic Area (EEA) and Switzerland need to apply for a UK Visa as family visitors. The reasons might include visiting family, doing business, to get married or for medical reasons.

There used to be several different types of visitor visas. However, they were recently replaced by the Standard Visitor visa.


To travel to the UK as a family visitor, you must be able to show that you will be visiting the following family members in the UK:

  • Spouse, civil partner, father, mother, son, daughter, brother or sister;
  • Grandfather, grandmother, grandson or granddaughter;
  • Spouse or civil partner’s father, mother, brother or sister;
  • Son or daughter’s spouse or civil partner;
  • Stepfather, stepmother, stepson, stepdaughter, stepbrother or stepsister; or
  • A person you have been living with in a genuine and subsisting relationship, like marriage or civil partnership, for at least 2 years before the day you apply.

You can apply for a Standard Visitor visa if you want to visit the UK:

For leisure, for example on holiday or to see your family and friends

You must also be able to show that:

  • You are 18 or over
  • You intend to visit the UK for no more than 6 months
  • You intend to leave the UK at the end of your visit
  • You have enough money to support and accommodate yourself without working or help from public funds, or you and any dependants will be supported and accommodated by relatives or friends
  • You can meet the cost of the return or onward journey
  • You are not in transit to a country outside the ‘Common Travel Area’

You can apply for a Standard Visitor visa if you want to visit the UK
Generally, applicants get six months to stay in the UK but those applying as academic visitors or parents of children at school in the UK can stay for 12 months at most.

You can apply for an extension of up to the maximum of 6 months if your original application was for less. You can also apply to come to the UK as a domestic worker for up to six months. There is no right of appeal against the refusal of an application for entry clearance as a Family Visitor and the refusal can only be challenged by way of Judicial Review. An application for permission to apply for Judicial Review must be lodged within 90 days of the date of the refusal of the application.
