Registration

Our specialist Immigration lawyers are highly experienced and can assist with registration for children to achieve British Citizenship, helping guide you through the process and increasing the chances of success.

Minors can register as British citizens by entitlement and discretion. Before considering a registration application, we must check whether the child is already a British citizen, in which case you do not need to register the child.
Registration

What is Registration?

Registration is the application process by which children and some categories of adults can apply to become a British citizen which will mean that they are allowed in and out of the UK without being subject to immigration restrictions.Certain statutory criteria must be met, and a valid application has to be made with supporting evidence.

The best approach may be determined by factors such as where and when the child was born and the status of the parents. We can advise you on the best route available for your child.

As a British citizen, some of the things the child will be able to do include:

  • Apply for a British passport
  • Have full access to NHS healthcare
  • Vote when they come of age
  • Work without restrictions when they are of age to get a job
What is Registration

Who Can Apply to Register a Child for British Citizenship?

In the UK, anyone under the age of 18 is considered to be a child. The law states that children cannot apply for their own citizenship, so their parents must apply for citizenship for them by ‘registering’ them.

It is possible to apply for your own British citizenship in the same application that you use to register your child, rather than applying separately. This is called a “family application”.

However, you should note that if you do this, you must confirm your awareness that your child’s application may be accepted and yours be rejected.

Our specialist team can advise and assist you with submitting a family application or registering your child with all the applicable documentation, increasing your chances of success.

Requirements for Registration Process of British Citizenship

To be eligible for a registration application, your child must be:

  • Under 18 years old when the application is made, and
  • Considered to be of ‘good character’ if they are over 10 years old, i.e. have not committed crimes or posed a threat to society

The below considerations will be given to any application you submit to register your child:

  • Both of their parents’ nationality and immigration status
  • Both of their parents’ views
  • How long they have lived in the UK for
  • Where their future is likely to be
  • Whether they are free of restrictions regarding being in the UK
If you are not sure whether your child is eligible to register for citizenship, our immigration team can advise you on the requirements and assist you with your application.

Biometric Information

All children under the age of 18 and over the age of 6 must provide fingerprints and photos of their face together with their registration application.

Documents You Must Provide

In addition to their biometric information, you will also have to submit additional documentation alongside the application, including evidence of their identity such as a passport, birth certificate, or driving licence.

Your child’s history and your heritage will determine what other documentation you have to provide. For more information, contact our immigration team today.
