Shazia Akhtar is Deo Volente’s partner and Head of Immigration Department. Having worked on over 500 cases, Shazia’s vast clientele from all walks of life and unwavering success rate on Immigration Matters is a testament to her enormous work ethic.
The ‘first-rate’ work ethic solicitor
Shazia has been with Deo Volente Solicitors since 2016. Her colleagues and clients know shazia as a formidable force with a big heart- whether it’s petitioning against injustices with the Home Office or operating an open-door policy for her fellow colleagues; her presence is felt. To exemplify this: In her short, four years with the firm, she has qualified as a phenomenal solicitor, become the head of our renowned Immigration Department (one of the reasons it is renowned is due to Shazia herself!), and a valued partner of the firm. Shazia is the only person within Deo Volente to be promoted to Partner just two weeks after her qualification.
Deo Volente Solicitors is exceptionally proud to have such an asset in Shazia. Shazia’s vast clientele from all walks of life and unwavering success rate on Immigration Matters is a testament to her enormous work ethic. She is a tangible example of the adage ‘Hard work is key to success’.
Once upon a time, in the English Countryside, a Solicitor was born..
Shazia grew up in St Ives, Cambridgeshire, and is an alum of St Ivo School. Whilst most British school-aged children didn’t even know what the word ‘Solicitor’ meant, Shazia fostered dreams of working in the legal profession. She completed her LLB in Law at Birbeck College, University of London, and completed her LPC at Anglia Ruskin University.
Shazia’s qualification into law was somewhat unconventional – but, if you have ever met Shazia, you will also know her love for any challenge and that doing things the easy way is far too dull. Shazia postponed her pursuit into law in lieu of raising her young family. She returned to her studies when her children were enrolled in full-time education. We share Shazia’s pride in her being one of the incredible working mothers within the legal industry.
An Olympian in Immigration Law
Having worked on over 500 cases, we hesitate to say that there isn’t a case that would seem foreign to Shazia. In her career she has:
Guaranteed families stay as a unit in the UK, working tirelessly on loved one’s applications
Triaged with her team to overcome any changes to the law presented by Brexit, keeping EU clients informed of how their visa may be impacted
Walked her clients through numerous First-Tier and Upper-Tier Tribunals, campaigning to ensure that any persons voice is heard within the court
Completed substantial pro-bono work as Shazia believes, as a Solicitor, it is her duty to advocate for those whom society often turns a blind eye to.
Shazia is compelled by a strong sense of justice and compassion which she illustrates within her work. She cites that her most valued and remembered cases are organising visas on domestic violence grounds for vulnerable clients. In fact, Shazia’s humanity runs deep and she hopes, in 2021, to complete further pro-bono work for clients who cannot afford legal representation.
